Part of being present is acknowledging where we are. We start with the body and perceive “what is there”, a skill called interception. These sensations, they are a recognition and culmination, result in feeling and emotion. Anodea Judith calls this charge or life force. The New Year in our culture comes with the horrible expectation of self-improvement. While wanting to spiritually expand and develop is natural, this is often capitalized on in our society and is presented in externalized self-improvement projects. The underlying assumption is a misperception of the mind and ego as we are already whole and perfectly imperfect.

As a therapist with a budding private practice, I frequently get the questions, “What do you specialize in?”  The question they are really asking is what pathology of human existence do I specialize in treating.


It is a medical model approach, I was taught it as well, and I am guilty of the question as well. In Western culture we treat after symptoms arise and especially in mental health when symptoms become problematic to our daily functioning, this is our path to diagnosis and treatment.
